IFEMA Madrid
The Feria de Madrid, operating under the IFEMA brand, functions as Spain's largest trade fair and congress organiser. Its main campus, located at the northeastern edge of Madrid adjacent to the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, comprises multiple pavilions with a combined gross exhibition area of over 200,000 square metres. The proximity to the airport terminal 4 is a deliberate geographic advantage for events drawing international delegations who require minimal ground transfer time.

IFEMA hosts a range of recurring international events, including FITUR (the international tourism trade fair), ARCO (the contemporary art fair) and SIMA (the real estate fair). The venue's Palacio Municipal de Congresos de Madrid, a purpose-built congress centre on the IFEMA campus, offers plenary halls, breakout rooms and exhibition foyers suitable for congresses of several thousand delegates.
Location and access
IFEMA sits at the intersection of the M-40 motorway and Avenida de la Capital de España Madrid, roughly 12 kilometres northeast of central Madrid. Metro line 8 provides a direct connection between Nuevos Ministerios station (where passengers can check luggage for certain Iberia and Vueling flights) and the Campo de las Naciones stop, a short walk from the main IFEMA entrance. Bus services operate from the T4 terminal directly to the venue during major events.
Fira Barcelona
Fira Barcelona operates two venue complexes: the Gran Via venue in the L'Hospitalet de Llobregat municipality bordering Barcelona, and the Montjuïc venue on the hill overlooking the city centre. The Gran Via site, opened in its current form in 2004, provides approximately 240,000 square metres of exhibition space distributed across eight halls, making it the larger of the two. The Montjuïc venue houses the Palau de Congressos de Catalunya and several classic pavilions from earlier world exhibitions.

Mobile World Congress and sector events
Mobile World Congress (MWC), organised by the GSMA, has been held at Fira Barcelona annually since 2006. The event consistently draws over 90,000 registered attendees from across the technology and telecommunications sectors, representing one of the largest trade events hosted in Europe. The logistics of accommodating this volume across the Gran Via venue, satellite exhibition spaces and the city's conference hotel stock has shaped how Barcelona's hospitality infrastructure expanded over the following two decades.
Beyond MWC, the Gran Via venue hosts Alimentaria (food and beverage trade), the Barcelona International Motor Show, and Gastech, among others. The Montjuïc complex handles smaller congresses and standalone plenary sessions, often for academic and scientific associations.
Transport links
The Gran Via venue is served by L9 Sud metro line (Fira stop) and the Aerobús connecting the airport with central Barcelona. From central Barcelona, the journey by metro takes approximately 20 minutes from Pl. Espanya, where the Montjuïc venue is also located.
Centro de Convenciones Internacional de Barcelona (CCIB)
The CCIB occupies a distinct position in Barcelona's congress infrastructure. Located in the 22@ innovation district in the Poblenou neighbourhood, it is purpose-built for congresses rather than trade exhibitions. The building's main auditorium seats around 3,200 delegates in a single-tier arrangement, and the venue's modular rooms can be configured for concurrent sessions of varying sizes.
The CCIB's position within the 22@ district means that delegates attending events there are surrounded by the technology and media companies that cluster in that area. Several of the district's hotels cater specifically to business travellers, and walking-distance networking in the evenings is a practical option that the airport-adjacent venues cannot replicate.
Regional Convention Facilities
Outside Madrid and Barcelona, several Spanish cities maintain dedicated convention infrastructure serving specific sectors and geographic catchments.
Palacio Euskalduna, Bilbao
The Euskalduna Conference Centre and Concert Hall occupies the former Euskalduna shipyard site on the Ría del Nervión in Bilbao. It opened in 1999 as part of the broader Abandoibarra urban regeneration project that also produced the Guggenheim Bilbao museum. The building's technical specification includes a main auditorium seating around 2,200, multiple meeting halls and direct connection to the Gran Hotel Domine Bilbao.
Palacio de Congresos de Valencia
Valencia's convention centre, designed by Norman Foster, opened in 1998 adjacent to the Viveros gardens. Its location is central to the city, roughly 15 minutes from Valencia Joaquín Sorolla high-speed rail station and 25 minutes from Manises airport. The facility is regularly used for medical and scientific congresses.
Fibes, Seville
FIBES (Palacio de Congresos y Exposiciones de Sevilla) opened in 2011 with pavilions designed to accommodate both trade exhibitions and plenary congresses. Its location near the Santa Justa AVE station reduces the transfer distance for delegates arriving by high-speed train from Madrid.
Note on venue capacity figures: Exhibition areas and seating capacities change with reconfiguration and venue expansions. The figures cited here are based on publicly available official venue communications as of 2026. Check with individual venues for current specifications before planning events.
Convention Bureau Infrastructure
Madrid and Barcelona each operate dedicated convention bureaux that work with event organisers considering Spain as a destination. The Madrid Convention Bureau operates under Madrid Destino, the city's tourism and event agency. The Barcelona Convention Bureau functions within Turisme de Barcelona. Both organisations provide venue matching services, accommodation block booking coordination and logistical support for international associations considering a congress bid.
Spain's General Secretariat for Tourism maintains a national-level MICE programme that coordinates promotion across international trade fairs such as IBTM World, held annually at Fira Barcelona's Gran Via venue.
